The Upper Midwest Trail Runners have added a brand spankin’ new race series to their calendar – this one all on snowshoes! The Braveheart Snowshoe Series consists of 14 different races of varying distances held in Minnesota and Wisconsin from Jan 9 until March 6. All abilities welcome!

The awesome Voyageur 50 Mile (and probably half Voyageur too?) are in need of a new RD since Rollie will be moving out of the area. The race is financially self supporting, and the current RD would like to find a replacement by early 2010 so that he can help with the transition.
Interested? Give Rollie a shout at trailrun thingy frontiernet dot net
Edit: Apparently the Cernow’s are still directing the Half (which typically takes place 2 weeks earlier than the 50), so only the Voyageur 50 Mile is looking for a new RD.

Just a quick note to post some changes to these events for 2010:
Zumbro will only have a 100 mile event this year – no 100K. The course will also be different from last year – check the web site for updates!
Grand Island Marathon & 10K will now be on Sunday rather than Saturday, and a 2K kids race has been added. All marathon finishers will receive a medallion this year; a custom, hand crafted ceramic medallion made by a local artist. Registration is already open with a price increase on Feb 1. The marathon typically fills by late Feb/early March, so if you want to participate, get your ducks in a row! I ran the marathon this past year and highly recommend it 🙂
Another Michigan trail festival, Woodstock, has had a date change: the correct dates for 2010 are September 24-26. They’ve got everything from 5 K to 100 miles and several other races in between!

The past week has brought some sad news about trail races that have been retired:
Chippewa Moraine 50K was suddenly canceled just a few weeks after being named the Upper Midwest Trail Runners Ultra Championship race for 2010. Doesn’t really make sense to me that the race would be canceled on such short notice, especially when there were 3 race co-directors. I’m sorry to see this one go since it was a great event on a beautiful course and was becoming a classic North Woods event after only 2 years in existence.
The Keweenaw Trail Running Festival near Copper Harbor, MI has also been retired after 10 years. I never got a chance to participate in this event but always wanted to, especially since I lived in the area for 4 years during my college days at Michigan Tech. They had 3 different events: a hill climb, a 10K, and a 25K in the beautiful Copper Country.
On an up note, the North Country Half Marathon, Marathon, and 50 Mile near Manistee, MI WILL take place on August 28, 2010 with a new event organizer 🙂

Know of a good trail race in the Upper Midwest that you’d like to see added to this site?
Go to the “About” page and submit your info rather than posting a comment on a particular page. That will keep the site cleaner and easier to navigate.
Thanks, and happy trails!
